winter thrills
By Eileen Nash, Director of Development, Double H Ranch
Navigating down a ski slope can be a daunting task for most able-bodied individuals, but for a child who may struggle to move about or get through the day due to illness, the idea can seem impossible. But it does happen – magically, wonderfully – at our haven in the Adirondack Mountains.
For more than 15 years, the Double H Ranch, a SeriousFun Camp in Lake Luzerne, NY, has offered an Adaptive Winter Sports Program for children ages 6-16 dealing with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The program allows children with all types of medical challenges and physical conditions to experience the thrill of speeding down a snowy hill on skis or a snowboard. Using specially adapted equipment, volunteer instructors and members of the National Ski Patrol help guide campers down the slope safely and with ease. Last winter alone, more than 600 skier lessons were taught.
"New experiences are always somewhat stressful as the parents of a child with autism," commented one parent. "But Evan's first day of skiing was simply extraordinary."
The program is aimed at not only teaching children a life-long skill, but also to provide an experience that can be enjoyed by the entire family.
"It was truly inspiring," remarked another parent. "It gave us hope and reminded us that we are not alone in our feelings, hopes, dreams, and also our sorrow."
