5 ways to stay connected to camp

5 Ways to Stay Connected to Campby Kelly Elliott, Director, Camp Support Services

Do you have a child who is missing camp? Are you a counselor or volunteer who longs to be back helping children learn to ride a horse, hook a fish or reach the top of the rock wall for the first time? Here are a few suggestions on how you can stay connected to camp all year long.

  • Write a letter to your new BFF – Remember the days of actual handwritten mail? The feeling of paper between your fingers, the smell of the envelope, the delight when you realize the letter is from a friend and not just another bill or piece of junk mail? E-mail is ok, but tearing open the envelope to find a warm message from your new BFF is even better. Not sure where to send the letter? Get in touch with camp and they can forward it on for you.
  • Keep a journal or scrapbook – Wondering what to do with all of those projects made during Arts & Crafts or the photos you took? Put them all together in a book, and when you’re missing camp and feeling nostalgic, open the book up and let the memories come back to life.
  • Recreate your favorite camp activity at home – Needing a s’more fix? You can use your toaster oven to make one! Fill up a bucket of water and pull out all those old t-shirts, add a little dye and make yourself a new tie dye shirt. Turn up the radio, invite some friends and start your own stage night or dance party.
  • Make a camp music playlist – Stars in the Sky, Ice Cream and Cake, the new Justin Bieber song or maybe Taylor Swift? – hearing those quintessential camp songs can make the feeling of camp rush back into your heart. Search the internet or music store for all those great tunes and dance just like you did back at camp.
  • Connect on social media – Camps (and SeriousFun) are using social media like never before to share photos, stories and news. Find them, follow them, comment on their posts and retweet them. (Missing your favorite counselor? Check-in with camp first to find out what their policy is on connecting through Facebook or Twitter.)
